St. John’s native Cody Donaghey is heading to Tennessee this week after being invited by the National Hockey League’s Tampa Bay Lightning to be part of their team in a pre-season prospects tournament in suburban Nashville.

The 23-year-old Donaghey recently signed to an ECHL contract with the Orlando Solar Bears, a Lightning affiliate. He had spent the 2018-19 season with the Solar Bears while under contract to the NHL’s San Jose Sharks, but became a free agent earlier this summer when the Sharks didn’t offer him a new deal.

Donaghey led all Orlando defencemen with 43 points (15G, 28A), setting a franchise record by scoring by a rearguard.

Games in the prospects showcase in Antioch, Tenn., begin Saturday, with the Carolina Hurricanes, Washington Capitals and Nashville Predators providing the opposition for the Lightning.

Players report for physicals on Thursday leading to two practice sessions.
