The NHL’s plans for the 2020-21 regular season could be coming more into focus.

Still, fuzziness remains.

Nothing official from the NHL, but belief is growing that the start date of next season will be pushed back until at least Jan. 15. In that case, training camps would start somewhere around Jan. 1, which was the date the NHL originally had in mind to begin the season.

The NHL reportedly is considering a schedule in the range of 52-56 games. An all-Canadian division featuring the seven NHL clubs north of the border is all but a certainty.

In control of the situation, over and above the NHL and the Players’ Association, is the coronavirus pandemic.

MAVETY DIES

Larry Mavety, one of the Ontario Hockey League’s longest-serving coaches and builders, died on Friday at the age of 78.

Mavety, who moved into an advisory role with Kingston in 2011, was the sixth-winningest coach in OHL history with Belleville and Kingston. Only three men — Brian Kilrea, Bert Templeton and Stan Butler — coached more OHL games than the 1,514 games compiled by Mavety.
