Two familiar names associated with ball hockey were inducted into the Canadian Ball Hockey Hall of Fame Wednesday prior to a game at the national senior men’s ‘A’ championship being staged in metro St. John’s.
At The Glacier in Mount Pearl, Paul Barron and Bob Dawson of St. John’s were enshrined in the Hall prior to a game between the Black Horse squad from Newfoundland and the Host squad.
Tonight at 7:20 at The Glacier, two more Newfoundlanders will be inducted into the national ball hockey Hall of Fame. Mount Pearl’s Terry Ryan Jr. and Gary Wadden of St. John’s will be inducted prior to a game between Black Horse squad and New Tecumseth Xtreme from Ontario, who both enter Thursday with 3-0 records.
Barron, Dawson, Ryan and Wadden will join fellow Newfoundlanders Sean Donovan and Dick Power, who were previously inducted into the national ball hockey Hall of Fame.
On Wednesday, Black Horse got two goals and two assists from ECHL champion Zach O’Brien in its 5-1 win over the Host squad. O'Brien is one of the many top-level ice hockey players from this province playing in national ball hockey championships here this week.
Another is Newfoundland senior league scoring star Jordan Escott (1G, 3A), who also delivered a four-point performance for the winners Wednesday..
The Host side fell to 0-3 with the loss.
Two other national ball hockey championships are being conducted in the metro area this week.
In the women’s event, NL United takes a 1-1-1 record into a matchup against the winless Host team (0-3-0) 6 p.m. today at the Glacier. But even if it wins what will be its final round-robin game, United will at best finish second in the preliminary round behind New Tecumseth (3-0-1).
In the men’s masters event, the NL Colonial Selects (1-0-1) takes on the York Express of Ontario 4:30 p.m. today at The Glacier, while NL Cabot (1-1-0) faces the Ottawa Capitals 3 p.m. at Goulds Arena.
