Once again, IceCaps can't keep up with Comets

For the second night in a row, the St. John’s IceCaps tippy-toed through 60 minutes of hockey, while the streaking Utica Comets got down to brass tacks with a workmanlike approach in a 3-1 American Hockey League win at Mile One Centre Tuesday.

Keith Gosse/The Telegram St. John's IceCaps forward Chris Terry(22) has his shot stopped by Utica Comets goaltender Richard Bachman as the Comets’ Ashton Sautner (6) looks on during AHL hockey action at Mile One Centre Wednesday night. Bachman made the save on the shot, but was scored on as the IceCaps’ Michael McCarron tapped in the rebound. The assist he earned on the tally extended Terry’s AHL’s point streak to nine games. But the goal was the only one the IceCaps could manage in a 3-1 loss.

It capped a series sweep for the Comets over the IceCaps, who despite the presence of Michael McCarron and Chris Terry back from Montreal, and Charles Hudon back from injured reserve, looked positively substandard in back-to-back games against Utica, which has climbed to within three points of the third-place IceCaps in the North Division.

The IceCaps have now lost six of their last eight games and fall to 19-16-5.

Wacey Hamilton, Borna Rendulic and Cody Kunyk scored for the Comets. McCarron had the lone St. John’s goal.

Things started off fine enough for the IceCaps, who jumped out to a 1-0 lead with the only goal of the first period, 20 minutes in which the IceCaps, in fairness, held the advantage.

That, however, would be it.

The opening tally came about when McCarron swooped in and banged a rebound past Richard Bachman, who made the first save off a Terry shot.

Terry picked up an assist on the play, keeping his nine-game point-scoring streak alive. It was Terry’s 16th point in the past nine games.

But it was all Comets from that point on, as Hamilton and Rendulic scored within 46 seconds of each other in the middle frame. Both goals came as a result of turnovers by the IceCaps defence.

The final numbers on the shot clock read 33-25 in favour of the IceCaps, but that was in no way indicative of the game, as Bachman, for the second night in a row, barely broke a sweat in posting the win.

Yann Danis got the start in goal for St. John’s, following an ordinary performance by Charlie Lindgren in Tuesday’s 5-2 Utica win. Danis made 22 saves.

The IceCaps try to get back on the winning side of things this weekend, when the Albany Devils swing by Mile One Saturday and Sunday. Both games start at 4 p.m.
