The O’Donel Patriots continued their upset string Tuesday night in Goulds as they edged the Mount Pearl Huskies 2-1 in Game 1 of the Metro High School Hockey League championship at Goulds Arena.
Nick Moore and Andrew Kennedy, the latter with the third-period game-winner, scored for O'Donel. Nick Gosse had the lone goal for Mount Pearl.
The Patriots, who had finished third in the regular season, upended the second-place Queen Elizabeth Pioneers in the semifinal, setting up the matchup with the league-leading Huskies, their Mount Pearl rivals who had claimed the prestigious Confederation Cup tourney earlier this season.
Mount Pearl, which had a 15-3-2 record in the Metro league regular season (including was 3-1 against O’Donel), downed the St. Kevin’s Mavericks in their best-of-three semifinal.
Game 2 of the best-of-three Metro final goes 8 p.m. Friday at the Paradise Double Ice Complex.
That’s the same start time and date for the opening game of the St. John’s High School Hockey League final between the Holy Heart Highlanders and Gonzaga Vikings.
Holy Heart bested Holy Trinity in the semifinal round, while Gonzaga got past the Waterford Valley Warriors.
The St. John’s final opens 8 p.m. Friday at Twin Rinks.
