Blake Fudge scored at 5:25 into overtime to give the CBR Renegades a 5-4 win over the Marks Mount Pearl Blades Saturday night in the opening game of the 2018 St. John’s Junior Hockey League final.
Andrew Barron, Ryan Day, Lucas Lush and Luke Peddle also scored for the Renegades. James O’Brien, with two, Colin O’Neill and Bobby Upshall had the tallies for Mount Pearl.
Mount Pearl trailed 4-2 with less than two minutes remaining in the second period before Upshall and O’Brien scored 68 seconds apart.
That led into a scoreless third, creating the need for the extra frame and leading to Fudge’s heroics.
The game was played at the C.B.S. Arena, but it is Mount Pearl, which finished in first place with just two regular-season losses, which has home-ice advantage in the best-of-seven series.
The next two matchups in the final are at the Glacier in Mount Pearl, beginning with Game 2 at 7:15 p.m. tonight.
