D.J. Smith was on hand to lend a hand Thursday afternoon.
Scott Bachly, chair of the Smilezone Foundation, was in Ottawa to donate masks to the Children’s Treatment Centre, located on the campus of the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario, for the kids to wear because of the threat of the novel coronavirus and he had an assist from the Senators coach.
The Smilezone in Ottawa, an area located in the CHEO school, was dedicated to late Senators general manager Bryan Murray in March 2015 and Smith got involved with the organization, which includes former NHLer Adam Graves on its board of directors.
Bachly said with construction of new Smilezones in hospitals around the country put on hold because of COVID-19, the organization wanted to give back.
“They go to cities and they provide joy and entertainment for the situation these kids are in, whether it’s video games or adding aquariums or pictures,” Smith said. “They do all these things that wouldn’t be covered and they try to make the situation a little more fun.
“That’s something that’s really important when these kids are going through a tough time.”
