The CBR Assante Wealth Management Renegades and Mount Pearl Mark’s Blades both recorded a pair of wins of the weekend to inch closer towards playing off for the St. John’s Junior Hockey League championship.
The Renegades took a pair of wins over the Southern Shore Breakers for a 2-1 lead in their best-of-seven semifinal, while the Blades have a commanding 3-0 lead on the C.B.N. Stars.
At The Glacier in Mount Pearl Sunday night, Michael Broders scored twice and assisted on two others as the Blades registered an 8-2 win. Daniel Toope and Colin O’Neill also scored twice for Mount Pearl. Grant Thompson and Mitch McGrath added singles. Bobby Upshall was the Blades’ player of the game with four assists. Brandon Short made 32 saves.
Michael Mason and David Hibbs had the C.B.N. goals.
The Blades took a 2-0 lead in the series Friday night with a 6-1 decision behind McGrath’s two goals. Broders had a goal and three assists, while James O’Brien, Brady Normore and Upshall provided the other goals. Luke Ackerman was the lone goalscorer for C.B.N.
Short stopped 54 shots for the Blades, while Riley Petton made 38 saves for the Stars.
The Renegades registered a 5-1 win over the Breakers Saturday night at the C.B.S. Arena. Nick David, Lucas Lush, Blake Fudge, Tyler Wall and Dominic Nugent were the CBR marksmen. Liam Hynes got the lone Southern Shore goal.
CBR outscored the Shore by an 11-5 count Friday night at the Southern Shore Arena. Tyler Nickson had a big night for the Renegades with three goals and three assists, and Michael Lawrence, Fudge and Wall each scored twice. David and Brad Connors both had a goal. Hynes was the Breakers’ top producer with two goals and two assists. Donavan Warren, Blake Dalton and Shayne Kavanagh also found the back of the net for the Shore.
All four teams are in action next Friday night. The Blades play host to the Stars 7:30 p.m. at The Glacier, while the Breakers play the Stars 7:45 at the Southern Shore Arena.
