St. John's junior hockey: Caps go on the defensive

The Cowan Heights Dental Group St. John’s Caps used a stingy defence to register a pair of weekend wins in the St. John’s Junior Hockey League.

The Caps blanked the Mount Pearl Mark’s Blades 3-0, then posted a 3-1 decision over the C.B.N. MoorFrost Stars.
Ian Woolfrey stopped 37 shots for the shutout over the Blades, outduelling Mitch Rogers, who made 31 saves. Both goalies were Jungle Jim’s players of the game. Nathan Peters had two goals for the winners.
In the rematch at Bay Roberts, all the scoring came in the second period as Liam Maher, Matthew Smith and Chris Mallard tallied for the Caps and Ryan Dawson replied for the Stars.
Elsewhere in the junior circuit over the weekend:
• The Blades downed the Trinity-Placentia I.J. Smith Home Building Centre Flyers 5-1, and the Stars beat the Northeast Pizza Delight Aberdeen Ave. Eagles 5-1, with Reilly Deering leading the way with two goals.
• Tyler Wall scored twice as the CBR Assante Wealth Management Renegades doubled the Avalon Roebothan McKay Marshall Capitals 4-2. It was a rough-and-tumble affair, with 143 minutes in penalties called.
• Liam Hynes scored his second goal of the night 47 seconds into overtime to lift the Southern Shore C&W Offshore Breakers to a 3-2 win over the Flyers. The Breakers’ Josh Carey, with 32 saves, and the Flyers’ Chris Smith, with 44, were players of the game.
