Mount Pearl hockey player Brandi George is The Telegram Sports Department’s choice as athlete of the week.
George is a member of the Midget AAA Female Ice Breakers who won a silver medal last weekend at the SEDMHA (Shearwater East/Dartmouth) tournament in Nova Scotia. It’s the largest female hockey competition in Canada.
Playing in the tourney’s top division, the Ice Breakers lost to Kings County, P.E.I., 2-0 in the championship final, but not before George claimed the division scoring title by a wide margin, leading all players with 13 points and 10 goals in six games.
George, who turns 17 on Sunday, wasn’t the only member of the Ice Breakers to top the scoring parade. Her teammates, Desiree Snook and Lauara Cassell, were second and third overall with eight and seven points, respectively, for the Ice Breakers, who were 4-2 in the tourney, outscoring their opponents 17-8 in the process.
