The Caps dropped a 4-1 decision to the Trinity-Placentia I.J. Smith Home Building Centre Flyers Sunday afternoon in Whitbourne, but St. John’s remains on the winning side of the ledger with a 5-2 record.

“There are a few veterans left over, but for the most part there’s a lot of first- and second-year players,” said forward Kyle Rumsey, who scored the Caps’ only goal Sunday.

“I think we’re pretty young compared to most teams in the league.”

Dakota Warren, Jordan Mercer, Matt Hanson and Conal McNamara scored for the Flyers Sunday.

Rumsey is one of those rookies, a 17-year-old from the St. John’s minor system who played high school hockey with Holy Heart last season.

Rumsey says the players are all familiar to each other in the dressing room, having played with and against each other coming up through the ranks.

“Some of us went to different high schools, whether it was Gonzaga or Heart or Waterford Valley, but we’re back together again,” he said. “There’s definitely some familiarity.”

Rumsey had a breakout game Saturday night, potting all four St. John’s goals as the Caps slipped past the CBR Assante Wealth Management Renegades 4-3 at Twin Rinks. Rumsey’s linemate, third-year Grant Nolan, had two assists. Overager Zac Cooper also plays on the line.

“I’m starting to get some good minutes now,” Rumsey said. “Earlier in the season, I was getting third-line and fourth-line minutes. You have to work your way up, I suppose.

“We’ve got some good speed on our line, and there’s some chemistry developing.”
