The 25-year-year-old centre has signed a one-year American Hockey League contract with the Bakersfield Condors, the top farm team of the NHL’s Edmonton Oilers.
O’Brien has played three full seasons in the AHL, with the Manchester Monarchs (2-13-14 and 2014-15) and the Chicago Wolves (2015-16). He won a Calder Cup with Monarchs in 2015
Last season, O’Brien started with Ravensburg in German’s second division, but left that club to join the ECHL’s Wichita Thunder. He also got into one game with the Binghamton Senators, Wichita’s AHL partner.
In 175 career AHL games, including one with the St. John’s IceCaps, O’Brien has 33 goals and 48 assists for 81 points. He had nine goals and 27 points in 32 games with Wichita last season and scored a goal in his lone appearance with Binghamton.
