It was a great day in the Bishop household in St. John’s Wednesday.
First, the family received news 19-year-old Joel Bishop had been named an assistant captain of the Halifax Mooseheads.
It is Bishop’s fourth year with the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League team, which is playing host to the Memorial Cup in the fall.
Four players were named alternates and will split the duties while at home and on the road. Joining Bishop as assistants are Samuel Asselin, Jared McIsaac and Benoit-Olivier Groulx. Antoine Morand, a second-round draft pick of the Anaheim Ducks and the Mooseheads’ leading scorer, is the team captain.
Bishop is back in the Mooseheads’ lineup following a stint on injured reserve.
Meanwhile, down in Raleigh, N.C., the Carolina Hurricanes announced Clark Bishop is getting his first call-up to the NHL.
Through four AHL games this season with the Charlotte Checkers, Bishop has a goal and two assists.
The Hurricanes next play Saturday afternoon against the Colorado Avalanche in Raleigh. Bishop hasn’t heard if he’ll be in the lineup, though it’s hard to figure the Hurricanes would call up a 22-year-old third-year pro to sit him in the press box.
Bishop was selected by the Hurricanes in the fifth round, 127th overall, in the 2014 NHL Draft following four seasons with the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League’s Cape Breton Screaming Eagles.
