The St. John’s Maple Leafs and East Coast Blizzard will have a head-to-head showdown next weekend as the Newfoundland Major Midget Hockey League wraps up its regular season schedule with games in Mount Pearl and Conception Bay North.
Only one point separates the Leafs and Blizzard for top spot in the league, meaning next weekend’s games at The Glacier, home to the Leafs, will determine which team has home ice advantage through the playoffs.
Likewise, the Western Kings and Tri-Pen Osprey are separated by only two points and their games next weekend at the Bay Arena in Bay Roberts and the Danny Cleary Community Centre in Harbour Grace will determine who gets home ice in their first-round playoff series.
Only one game was played this past weekend, a makeup game from November and it was Tri-Pen beating the Blizzard 5-2 at the Trinity-Placentia Stadium in Whitbourne.
Luke Akerman, the league’s leading scorer, led the way with two goals and an assist. Mark Rumsey, Liam Best and Ethan Crosbie also scored for the winners. Chase Wellon and Brady Mitchelmore had the Blizzard goals.
