ST. JOHN'S, N.L. — For the first time in 80 years, the Royal St. John’s Regatta Committee has decided to cancel its annual event.

"The Royal St. John’s Regatta Committee is in full agreement with the direction provided by government and health officials regarding large-scale events and will continue to take all necessary actions to support the protection of our community in this difficult time," president Bradley Power wrote in a statement which notes that Placentia, Harbour Grace and Humber Valley regatta committees are expected to make similar announcements in the coming days.

“While we are proud of our 202 years of tradition, such tradition will never be at the expense of our community’s health and safety; we will support all continued efforts against the spread of the Coronavirus," added Noelle Thomas-Kennell, Vice-President and Captain of the Course.

The committee says it will provide details on a new online consultation process in the coming days, inviting regatta stakeholders and the general public to provide input on event's operation once the public health emergency orders are lifted and mass gatherings are deemed safe to resume.

"When deemed safe by health authorities, we want to ensure a Regatta event encompasses everything necessary to make it worthwhile to all participants; as an athlete, supporter or member of the public," stated director of rowing Jennifer Windsor-Browne.
