The Memorial Sea-Hawks’ men’s soccer team remained in the hunt for a playoff berth, while the women’s soccer squad managed a rare point off a very good Acadia Axewomen squad in weekend Atlantic University Sport play.
At King George V Park in St. John’s, the men’s team registered a couple of shutout wins over visiting Acadia, while the Lady Birds and Axewomen played to a scoreless draw Sunday following a 2-0 Acadia win Saturday.
Sunday marked the first time this season the first-place Axewomen (6-0-1) did not register a win.
In St. John’s on Sunday, rookie Sea-Hawks keeper Dylan Crichton made seven saves in a 5-0 Memorial win to post his second straight shutout.
Harry Carter, Jacob Grant, Tyler Kirby, Kyle Williams and Alex Dolomount had the goals.
Grant was actually red-carded at 55 minutes, meaning the Sea-Hawks played the last 35 minutes with 10 men, but still scored a pair of goals when shorthanded.
On Saturday, it was Williams with a pair of goals and Crichton with four saves as Memorial won 2-0.
The Sea-Hawks are 3-3-2 on the season, and tied with the University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds for the sixth and final playoff berth in the AUS conference.
In Sunday’s women’s scoreless draw, Sydney Walsh made six saves for the Sea-Hawks, who were foiled by Acadia’s Sarah Charnock on the three shots they managed.
Saturday, Acadia won 2-0, with Walsh called upon to make 11 saves for Memorial.
Shutouts are the norm for the Axewomen, who are the best defensive team in the conference, having allowed just one goal in seven games so far this season.
The Lady Birds are 4-2-2 on the year, and fourth in the AUS.
The men’s and women’s team are off now until Oct. 19-20 when they travel to Nova Scotia for games against Cape Breton in Sydney and St. Francis Xavier in Antigonish.
