Gavin Ives of Millwood and Abbey Baker of Halifax West captured the Capital Region boys’ and girls’ golf championships respectively on Monday at the Grandview Golf Club.
Ives shot a 74 to edge out Zach Woods of East Coast Varsity, who fired a 75, Gavin Keating of Sir John A. Macdonald and Jake Smith of Dartmouth High, both at 76.
Baker fired a 79 to win the girls’ crown by 11 strokes over Annika Parkash of Halifax Grammar (90). Katie MacIntyre of Lockview (91) and Lily Reid of Halifax Grammar (92) followed.
The top four finishers in both the girls’ and boys’ divisions advance to the NSSAF championship next Monday at the Amherst Golf Club. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, a team championship will not be contested at the provincial tournament.
Citadel won the Capital region boys’ team title followed by C.P. Allen, Lockview and Halifax West.
Halifax Grammar captured the girls regional banner ahead of Lockview, Citadel and C.P. Allen. Fifty-five boys and 19 girls competed in the regional championship.
"Given the current circumstances it was great to see all of the student athletes out on the golf course enjoying a safe and healthy round of golf," said Shane Joseph, the athletic director at Halifax Grammar School, and co-ordinator of the event. "There were coaches on the course with each of the groups to help supervise and ensure safe, physcial distancing. The athletes followed all of the protocols put in place by the tournament organizers and gold course management.
Results from other regionals were unavailable at press time.
