Newfoundland and Labrador, represented by the Brad Gushue rink from St. John’s, plays its first game at the 2020 Tim Hortons Brier Canadian men’s curling championship in Kingston, Ont., with a game this afternoon against Manitoba, skipped by Jason Gunnlaugson.

The 16-team Brier field is divided into a pair of eight-team pools for preliminary play.

Gushue, Mark Nichols, Brett Gallant and Geoff Walker are entered in a pool with Manitoba, Alberta’s Brendan Bottcher, Northern Ontario’s Brad Jacobs, Nova Scotia's Jamie Murphy, Quebec's Alek Bedard, Bryan Cochrane of Prince Edward Island and Nunavut's Jake Higgs.

Each team will play seven round-robin games, after which the top four finishers in each pool will advance to the championship pool, taking their records with them.

In the championship round, teams will play the four teams crossing over from the other pool.

From there, the rinks with the best four records will move into Page Playoffs starting March 7 and concluding with the championship final March 8.

The Brier winner represents Canada at the world men's curling championship beginning March 28 in Glasgow, Scotland.
