The flurry of activity surrounding the St. John’s Edge basketball team’s 2019-20 makeover continued Tuesday as the National Basketball League of Canada squad announced yet another player signing, and like many of the others, Karrington Ward has a connection to head coach Steve Marcus.
Ward is a 6-7 wing from Lockport, Illinois, who will begin his fifth season as a pro following stops in Europe and the NBA G-League.
“Karrington and I have a relationship that dates back to our time with the Maine Red Claws (of the G-League),” Marcus said in a statement. “He is an unbelievable person who will make an immediate impact to our organization, on and off the court. He immediately becomes one of, (the best athletes) if not, the best athlete in our league.”
Ward spent the better parts of four seasons in the G-League, with Maine, Bakersfield Jam, Oklahoma City Blue, and the last two seasons with the Windy City Bulls.
He joins the Edge after spending the first two months of this season in Luxembourg, where he averaged 19.8 points per game and 10.2 rebounds per game.
He’s a 2015 graduate of Eastern Michigan University.
Ward is the 14th player signed by the Edge so far this season. They also own the rights to Canadian Tyrrel Tate after a trade announced on Monday.
The Edge open their 2019-20 NBL season on the road in a rematch of the most recent league final.
St. John’s takes on the defending champion Moncton Magic Dec. 27 in what is the first game of St. John's 36-game regular-season schedule.
The first home contest for the Edge is Jan. 7, when they host the KW Titans at Mile One Centre.
