Memorial Sea-Hawks basketball player Cole Long is the latest Subway Atlantic University Sport (AUS) male athlete of the week.
Long , a St. John’s native who is in his fourth year of collegiate eligibility but in his first season with the Sea-Hawks, led Memorial to a pair of wins at home over the Acadia Axemen on the weekend.
In Saturday’s 91-72 win over Acadia, he had a game-high 34 points to go along with eight rebounds, three assists, two steals and two blocks. In an 89-76 victory in a rematch Sunday at the Field House, Long contributed a game-high 22 points and was just shy of a double-double with nine rebounds.
The weekend performance moved Long into the AUS scoring lead with an average of nearly 21 points per game through the first six games for Memorial (4-2).
Long was earlier named Memorial’s male athlete of the week.
The school’s female honours went to another basketballer, Sammie Deakin-Sharpe, who continued her strong early season play off the bench, scoring a total of 31 points and grabbing eight rebounds as the Lady Hawks (4-2) split their weekend series with Acadia.
