Matt Noseworthy edged out David Freake by just three seconds to finish first overall in the Harry G. Mews Memorial eight-kilometre road race Sunday in St. John’s.

Kate Bazeley won the women’s title of the Athletics North East-organized race in record time.

On a rainy morning, Noseworthy (25 minutes and 24 seconds) and Freake (25:27) were the first two of 380 runners to cross the finish line at Quidi Vidi Lake after traversing a course that started at Mundy Pond.

Despite the damp conditions, the cool air was welcomed by runners, many of whom put in solid times.

Mark Greene was third in 26:11, followed by Nick Snow in 26:27.

Bazeley was fifth overall in 26:28, besting her 2014 time, the previous Mews 8K female standard, by 14 seconds.

Bazeley was one of three women runners in the top seven overall, followed by 2018 Mews 8K female champion Anne Johnston (26:38) and Jennifer Murrin (26:43),

The Mews 8K has long been seen as a key tune-up race for the Tely 10, which goes July 28.
