It’s only half the distance of The Telegram 10-Mile road race, but local running expert Art Meaney calls the H.G.R. (Harry) Mews Memorial 8K, set to go Sunday in St. John’s, the ideal opportunity for runners to test their readiness for the Tely 10.

“If you double your Mews 8k time and add about two minutes, you'll get a pretty good idea what your Tely 10 time will be in two weeks,” Meaney is quoted on the online site of Athletic North East, which sponsors the Mews Memorial, now in its 32nd year.

The race, which begins 8 a.m. Sunday on Mundy Pond Road near Murphy’s Lane, is a pond-to-pond affair, with a course that runs from Mundy Pond to Quidi Vidi Lake.

Runners actually will run completely around Mundy Pond on adjacent roads before heading to Ropewalk Lane and then Empire Avenue, which will take entrants almost all the way to the finish at the Quidi Vidi Boathouse.

Reigning Tely 10 Colin Fewer holds race record of 23 minutes and 49 seconds, set in 2014, while Kate Bazely has the fastest female time ever, a 26:42 in 2011.

23:49 ( 2014)

The 2018 Mews winners were Ryan Brockerville (24:22) and Anne Johnston, who came extremely close to Bazely’s mark with a time of 23:53.

The 2019 Tely 10 is July 28.
