The COVID-19 pandemic threw a wrench into Memorial University’s athletics awards banquet this week, but it didn’t stop the Sea-Hawks’ top athletes from being honoured following the 2019-20 U Sports season.
There was no 60th annual Sea-Hawks Athletic Awards banquet this year, but Memorial did announce online its MVPs for varsity sports, and the female and male athletes of the year.
The winners were:
BUTLER TROPHY
The Butler Trophy is awarded annually to Memorial’s female and male athletes of the year.
Selection is made from each team’s most valuable player.
Male and female recipients are Cole Long, Haille Nickerson and Jade Roberts. Nickerson and Roberts tied for the female award.
Long was a first-team AUS all-star, and just missed out on a men’s conference scoring crown.
Nickerson led both the AUS and the country in scoring on the hardwood this season, averaging 24.6 points per game. She was also named an all-Canadian.
Roberts returned to the Sea-Hawks’ cross-country team this season, and was crowned AUS champion.
EDWARD P BROWNE TROPHY
The Edward P. Browne Memorial Trophy is presented annually to the outstanding male and female basketball players.
Recipients of the award are Long and Nickerson.
ALAN ROSS TROPHY
The Alan Ross Trophy recognizes the male and female soccer most valuable players.
Winners for 2019-20 are Michael O'Brien and Sydney Walsh.
Walsh posted five shutouts in the Sea-Hawks’ goal this season.
NLVA MVP AWARD
The NLVA Most Valuable Player Awards in volleyball are presented annually to an outstanding female Sea-Hawks player.
This year’s recipient of the 2019-20 NLVA Most Valuable Player award is Katie Wager.
JOHN DRINKWATER TROPHY
The John Drinkwater Memorial Trophy is presented annually to the most outstanding performance by a male or female varsity swimmer. The 2019-20 John Drinkwater Trophy winner is Thomas Chafe.
JUBILEE CUP
The Jubilee Cup is presented annually to the most outstanding cross-country runners. Winners are Jade Roberts and Levi Moulton.
TRACK AND FIELD MVP
The Track and Field MVP recognizes the most valuable female and male track and field athletes. MVPs are Ben Kirlow and Shae LeDevehat.
