To nobody’s surprise, what’s left of the 2019-20 National Basketball League of Canada season was officially cancelled Wednesday.

In a news release, the NBL Canada’s board of governors unanimously voted to cancel the remainder of the 2019-20 regular season and playoffs as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The NBL Canada's decision to cancel the remainder of the 2019-20 season, as well as the playoffs, was truly a difficult one to make," said deputy commissioner Audley Stephenson. “Our owners, management, support staff, players and coaching staff invested countless hours in preparation for the season, and it’s incredibly sad that we were unable to complete the year the way we would have liked to.”

The St. John’s Edge were 11-9 this season, and second in the Atlantic Division this season. The Edge had 16 games remaining, with 10 of them set to be played at Mile One.

In mid-March, the ECHL’s Board of Governors approved the cancellation of the remainder of the 2019-20 year, which shut down the Newfoundland Growlers’ season.
