Newfoundland and Labrador, represented by the Daniel Bruce-skipped rink out of the Re/Max Centre in St. John’s, will advance to the championship pool at the New Holland Canadian junior men’s curling championship in Langley, B.C.
Bruce, third Ryan McNeil Lamswood, second Joel Krats and lead Nathan King have a 5-0 record and are therefore guaranteed a top-four finish in their seven-team pool in the competition.
The top four finishers in each of two pools move on to the championship pool, taking their preliminary records with them. From the championship pool, four teams will move to the medal round.
Bruce and Co. won twice Monday, defeating the Northwest Territories 9-6, then scoring four points in the 10th and final end to get by a British Columbia team 10-9.
Comprised of Memorial University students, the Bruce rink curls out of the Re/Max Centre in St. John’s, but all its members are from other areas of the province. McNeil Lamswood, who is competing in his fifth national junior championship, is from Stephenville; Bruce and King, in their third Canadian juniors ,are from Corner Brook; and Krats is from Labrador City by way of Gander.
In the national junior women’s championship, also being played in Langley, N.L. is represented by Mackenzie Mitchell’s rink, also out of the Re/Max Centre.
Corner Brook native Mitchell, Katie Follett, Sarah Chaytor and Claire Hartlen lost 10-7 to Ontario Monday, leaving them with a 2-2 record heading into today, the final day of preliminary play, where they will face Saskatchewan and the Yukon.
The Bruce rink finishes its preliminary schedule against Saskatchewan tonight.
