Three female skaters from the metro area will represent the province at the Skate Canada Challenge beginning in Edmonton later this month.

Dayton Fifield from the Prince of Wales Skating Club in St. John’s will compete in the novice women’s division at the Challenge, which will be held Nov. 27 -Dec. 3.

Rachel Tuff and Kate Slaney, both members of the Mount Pearl-Paradise Skating Club, will be entered in the pre-novice women’s competition in Edmonton.

The three earned their berths as the result of their performances in the Skate Canada Newfoundland and Labrador sectionals, held over the weekend at the Glacier in Mount Pearl.

For skaters advancing from provincial sectionals, the Challenge represents the next qualifying event  ultimately leading to the 2020 Canadian figure skating championships, which will be held in Mississauga, Ont., in January.

Tuff and Fifield were among the award winners spotlighted at the end of the recent sectionals.

Fifield won the Skipper Award, donated in memory of Eric Cranford, as the skater in the highest singles category who meets or exceeds the Skate Canada Challenge minimum technical score in the free program.

Tuff was awarded the Polaris Artistic Cup for the most artistic performance.

The Sectional Merit Award, awarded to the skater with the most outstanding performance during the competition went to McKenna Mercer of the Mount Pearl-Paradise club.
