A pair of losses Thursday reduced Newfoundland and Labrador’s medal hopes at the Canadian mixed curling championship in Saguenay, Que.

But those hopes aren’t completely extinguished.

Corey Schuh and his rinkmates from the Re/Max Centre in St. John’s  own a 4-4 record in the championship pool — or second phase — of the national event. Four of the eight teams in the pool will advance to Saturday semifinals, and the Schuh rink will need wins over Quebec and New Brunswick today — and for results from other games today to fall in their favour.

The Newfoundland representatives had been 4-1 earlier in the competition, but lost its final preliminary-round game t0 the Northwest Territories, then suffered those two setbacks in the opening draws of championship-pool play, falling 7-5 to Manitoba and 6-5 t0 British Columbia.

The latter result was particularly tough considering the Schuh rink had jumped out to a 3-0 lead after three ends, but B.C. would steal three points in the sixth end en route to victory.
