The 2019 Molson provincial intermediate men’s fastpitch championship highlights what will be a busy weekend for Softball NL tournaments.

A half dozen teams are taking part in the intermediate tourney, beginning this evening at Lions Park. Five are from the St. John’s intermediate league, including defending tournament champion Conception Bay Central Junior Canadians, the Conception Bay South Storm, Lafontaine Club of Placentia, the Roebothan McKay Marshall Republic and Sportscraft Waterford Valley.

The other team is the provincial under-16 side.

The championship open at 6 p.m. today when the Republic takes on the Storm. That’s followed by a game between Lafontaine and Waterford Valley.

The teams are divided into a pair of three-team pools. After each team plays two preliminary games, the first-place team each pool advances directly to Sunday semifinals, while the second- and third-place teams will play Saturday evening to determine the other semifinalists.

The championship game is set for 2 p.m. Sunday.

Also on the Softball NL weekend schedule are the provincialU14 fastpitch championships, which double as qualifiers for Eastern Canadian championships in the age group.

In the female U14 division at Outer Cove, six teams — host Outer Cove, Bay Roberts, Goulds, Southern Shore and two entries from Conception Bay Central — are competing. There are eight teams in the boys event, hosted by Southern Shore and being played at fields in Witless Bay and Bay Bulls. Competing are Butlerville, Carbonear, Conception Bay Central, Conception Bay South, Clarenville, Goulds, Outer Cove, Placentia and Southern Shore.

Play in both divisions begins this morning, with championship games on Sunday evening.
