Two Newfoundlanders playing for University of New Brunswick teams have been named first team all-stars in Atlantic University Sport hockey.

Ashley Stratton of Mount Pearl, a second-year forward with the Reds women team, and Tyler Boland of St. John’s, a third-year centre with UNB, the defending national men’s champions, got the first-team nods after finishing the regular season as the leading scorers on their teams.

Boland’s 48 points in 30 games not only led the Reds and the AUS conference, but all of U Sport Canadian university men’s hockey. He was also plus-25 on the season, second-best among AUS forwards behind only teammate Patrick Watling.

Stratton had 30 points (13G, 17A) in 28 games and finished second in conference scoring, seven points behind AUS most valuable player Tyra Meropoulis of the St. Francis Xavier X-Women.

Stratton, who had only two penalty minutes all season, was also named the conference’s most sportsmanlike player.

Another Newfoundland player was named an AUS all-star. That’s Jolena Gillard of Deer Lake, who was voted to the women’s conference second team after leading the UPEI Panthers with 20 points (10G, 10A).

Boland was named to the men’s second all-star team last season, while Gillard was a selection to the AUS all-rookie squad in 2018-19. This is a first all-star selection for Stratton.

Acadia goaltender Logan Flodell was named the men’s conference MVP as the AUS annual awards and honours were announced Wednesday on the eve of the start of the men’s playoff semifinals tonight, where U Sport No. 1 seed UNB will be hosting Moncton in the opening game of a best-of-three series.

Stratton and Gillard will also be taking part in semifinal series, which begin this weekend in the women’s conference. UNB plays Saint Mary’s, while UPEI will take on St. FX.
