Zach Putt won his second straight Cape to Cabot 20K road race, bettering his time from last year by two minutes, but with apologies to Putt, the story of Sunday morning’s race belongs to the female winner, Jennifer Murrin, who also finished second overall.

Putt stopped the clock in a time of 1:16.47, while Murrin was right behind in 1:19.32.

She held a comfortable lead on the third-place finisher, Mark Richards, who finished in 1:24.49.

The race drew a maximum registration of 500 runners. The final number of finishers were 448.

Starting at the Cape Spear Lighthouse, the race took runners out Blackhead Rd., through Shea Heights, and through downtown St. John's. It finished with a run up Signal Hill.

The climb up Signal Hill is exactly the last mile of the race, and has been dubbed the Munn Mile.

Putt was fastest in the one-mile climb, while Murrin was third.

As for the 20K course, consider this: there’s a 550 meter elevation gain, 450 metre elevation drop, only three of the 20 kilometres are run on flat ground, and the course features four major climbs.

Putt finished second in the Uniformed Services half-marathon this season, while Murrin was fourth overall. She was second to Kate Bazeley in the Huffin’ Puffin’ provincial half-marathon.
