Royal St. John's Regatta: Much has changed for defending men's champs, except for their seeding

ST. JOHN'S, N.L. — Edited to show Courtney Langmead and Maryn Klien Beernink Work are new members of The Cahill Group crew and that Ben Colbourne is the coxswain

They have a new sponsor, a new stroke oar, one new crew member, a cox who once was the spare, a rower who once was the coxswain and a complete reshuffling of positions in the boat. Otherwise, the three-time defending men’s champions of the Royal St. John’s regatta looked very much like their old selves as they posted the top time of the Regatta Time Trials, held Saturday at Quidi Vidi Lake.

Fine Strokes, with James Cadigan on stroke oar and Daniel Cadigan, Mark Perry, Colin Stapleton, Mark Hayward and Adam Kavanagh rounding out the crew, posted a time of nine minutes, and 23 seconds, the fastest of the 15 senior men’s crews that took to the pond Saturday.

Coxing is Craig Whittle, who is both the owner of Fine Strokes Painting and Plastering and who had been the spare during the team’s three-year championship streak when they competed as Outer Cove. Whittle takes over steering from Hayward, who had been the coxswain of the crew, which rowed a time of 8:55.90 in the 2018 Regatta, third-fastest in the history of the event and about four-and-a-half seconds off  the men’s course record, set by Crosbie Industrial in 2007.

Kavanagah is the newcomer as he and Hayward replace Brent Hickey and Brent Payne, the former stroke and No. 5 oars, respectively. As part of the change, the four returning rowers moved up two places in the boat, with Hayward and Kavanagh at No. 2 and No. 1.

Hickey is now the team’s spare.

Belfor (stroke Eric King, Jamie Traverse, Steve Sweeney, Chris Sweeney, Kenny King, Nick Duke, spare Wayne Walsh, coxswain Kenneth King) had the second-fastest time among the senior male crews, almost nine seconds behind Fine Strokes,

Belfor had been fourth in last year’s men’s championship race.

Outer Cove’s three-year run of championships coincided with a winning streak by m5 on the women’s side. But after setting a new women’s course record of 4:56.10 in 2018, m5 isn’t back this year.

Hyflodraulic established itself as the favourite to become the new women’s champ by posting a 5:09.50, the fastest female time Saturday. The crew — stroke Catherine Kelly, Tracy Roche, Wendi Young, Teresa Butler, Amanda Butland and Jennie Wadden — is basically the same as that of the Smith Stockley entry that finished second to M5 in last year’s championship, with the one oar change seeing Wadden taking over for Tina Ring.

There’s also a switch on the tiller, with Whittle the coxswain here, too, replacing Paul Ring

The Cahill Group,, which was third which was third in last year’s Regatta women’s final with a lineup of stroke Hilary Sinclair, Shannon Driscoll, Lindsay Denine, Carla Chaytor, Stephanie O’Quinn, Jennifer Krysak and cox Frank Norris, also moved up a place. With Courtney Langmead and Maryn Klien Beernink Work in the lineup, Chaytor and Sinclair out and Ben Colbourne steering, they had a time of 5:17.50 Saturday, exactly eight seconds slower than Hyflodraulic.

There were 107 teams that posted times in Saturday’s trials, with 77 — or more than two-third of them — in female categories.

The aim of the trials is to have teams in various age-group/gender divisions with comparable times grouped together for individual Regatta Day races, in an attempt to create more even competition.

Teams are slotted for Regatta Day races within the division based upon times they row in the trial heats. The crew with the fastest time in its time-trial division gets to select the boat and stake of its choice for the Regatta, with the process continuing with the crew owning the second-fastest time, and so on.

The times from the trials will be used create a master schedule for the Regatta, set for Wednesday, Aug. 7.

Many of the crews competing in St. John’s will also take part in fixed-seats regattas in Placentia (set for July 2o this year) and Harbour Grace (July 27).
