St. John’s-based teams have pretty much owned the Canadian senior men’s softball championship over the last eight years, so maybe it makes sense, at some level, to have it played here.
On Monday, Softball Newfoundland and Labrador sent out a brief release announcing the next Canadian senior men’s championship will be held in St. John’s Sept. 2-6, 2020.
That tournament will be held in conjunction with the national masters men’s championship.
Newfoundland teams have won seven of the last eight Canadian senior men’s crowns. It was 3Cheers Pub Bud Light that took the first three and the Galway Hitmen claiming the last four.
However, the core roster for all seven teams was basically the same.
The one gap in the national championship streak came in 2017, when the Hitmen lost the title to Nova Scotia’s East Hants Mastodons.
This will be the third time in the last 14 years that St. John’s has been named to host the national men’s, the others coming in 2007 and 2016.
A third Canadian championship will be held in Newfoundland in 2020. That’s the men’s under-19 event, Aug. 11-16 in Carbonear.
