Let’s be honest. There’s a tendency to think of a joke where you hear about people tossing underwear.

But there is a very serious need behind the Newfoundland Growlers’ call for their fans to just that at tonight’s ECHL game at Mile One Centre, where a win over the Maine Mariners would give the Growlers their 19th straight home-ice victory, which would be a new league record.

You’ve often heard those looking for clothing donations asking for “gently used” items, but for obvious reasons, used underwear just can’t fall under that request. And it’s because of this that underwear and socks are items that badly needed by those who distribute clothing to society’s most vulnerable.

That’s why the Growlers are partnering with The Gathering Place in encouraging fans to bring new packages of socks or underwear to tonight’s game to toss on the ice during the first intermission.

”This winter has been especially hard on those who depend upon The Gathering Place on a daily basis,” said Joanne Thompson, executive director of the community service centre, which provides food, medical help and counselling services in addition to clothing,.

"It is through the continued kindness of our community that we are able to help those who need so much.”

One of The Gathering Place’s slogans is “Kindness Wanted,” and fans will be addressing that want by bringing new skivvies and stockings to the game.

And yes, it will be OK if you smile, even laugh, as you toss your underwear on the same ice that’s just been occupied by streaking Growlers.
