St. John’s Edge guard Maurice Jones has been named National Basketball League of Canada player of the week.
Jones recorded the first triple-double of the 2018-19 NBL Canada season Tuesday when he had 19 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds as the Edge ended a four-game losing streak with a 109-92 win over the Cape Breton Highlanders in Sydney, N.S.
St. John's head coach Doug Plumb was particularly impressed by how Jones rebounded.
“I was watching the film and my 5'7" guy is boxing out 6'5" forwards and getting rebounds," said Plumb.
Jones leads the Edge in scoring, averaging 16.3 points per games. He’s also first on the team in average assists (6.3) and steals (1.6) per contest, and despite being St. John’s shortest player at five-foot-seven, he’s tied for fourth on the team in rebounding, with 4.7 per game.
The Edge (2-5) begin a home stand with matchups against the Island Storm Friday night and Sunday afternoon at Mile One Centre.
