The Memorial Sea-Hawks women’s soccer team needs a win or a draw this weekend to secure itself an Atlantic Universities Sport conference playoff berth.
The Sea-Hawks’ men’s and women’s teams close out their 2018 AUS soccer regular seasons today and Saturday against St. Francis Xavier University, with games at King George V Park.
The women play 5 p.m. today and 1 p.m. Saturday.
The Lady Birds are 3-3-4, and sit in the sixth and final playoff spot with 13 points, three points behind St. FX (4-2-4).
Close behind Memorial is the University of New Brunswick, with 10 points. UNB has one game remaining, today against Mount Allison University, which has only one win this season.
Here’s the worst-case scenario: if MUN drops its two games, and UNB wins its game today, the teams would be tied with 13 points apiece for the last playoff spot. In that case, the Varsity Reds advance because of their 2-1 win over the Sea-Hawks last weekend in Fredericton, N.B., the only meeting between the two teams this season.
“That is the worst-case scenario,” said Sea-Hawks coach Mike Power, “but we’re not going to let that happen. The girls are very confident.”
However, if Memorial manages even a draw in one of the weekend meetings with St. FX, the Sea-Hawks take sixth place as the Varsity Reds won’t have enough points, even with a victory tonight.
Memorial has a string of five straight years as a participant in the AUS women’s soccer playoffs.
The Sea-Hawks have a pair of ties and two losses in their last four games.
As for Memorial’s men’s squad, they’re out of the playoff hunt with a 1-6-3 record. The X-Men come to town with a 6-3-1 mark.
Games are set for 7:15 tonight and 3:15 Saturday afternoon.
