Memorial University’s women’s basketball team played a couple of weekend pre-season games against the Saint Mary’s Huskies in Corner Brook, splitting the friendlies at Grenfell College.

In Corner Brook, second-year Sea-Hawk forward Alana Short showed she’s ready for more minutes this season with a couple of solid outings as the Sea-Hawks women’s basketball team split with the Huskies.

Saturday night, the Barrie, Ont., native who has Newfoundland ties scored 18 points and pulled down 10 rebounds in a 78-76 loss. Hannah Green scored 12 points and had four rebounds.

In Sunday’s 72-69 Memorial win, Short scored 14 points and recorded 13 boards. Green, a rookie, had 13 points and eight rebounds and Sammi Deakin-Sharpe had eight points and six boards.

This is a transition year for the Sea-Hawks, who reached the conference final last season before falling 84-74 to Acadia. But that team included Sydney Stewart, Sydney Ezekiel, Brooklyn Wright, and Rosie Stanoev, all lost to graduation. Stewart, Ezekiel, and Wright were three of the Sea-Hawks’ top four scorers last season.
