Newfoundland and Labrador will have seven athletes and two coaches on its team for Boxing Canada’s junior, youth and elite (Senior) national championships beginning Wednesday in Edmonton.

Four are junior athletes: Ryan Guay of the TRC Boxing Club and Carter Butler of the C.B.S. Boxing Club in the 46 kilogram weight class, Noah Squires of TRC (60 kg) and Mitchell Lahey of C.B.S. (81 kg).

In the youth division, Nicholas Callahan of TRC will compete at 64kg, and James Thorne of TRC will box in the 75 kg weight class.

In the elite section, Brandon Leaman of the Rock Athletics Club will box in the 64 kg division.

Coaching duties for Team NL will be handled by Jason Hayward of TRC and Todd Rideout of C.B.S.

Mike Summers, Boxing NL’s chief official, will also attend to work as one of Boxing Canada’s team of officials for the championships.

“Our team has been preparing for the past four months for this event. Some of this preparation included a number of competitions with Nova Scotia where we have fared quite well,” said Boxing NL president Hank Summers of St. John’s, who also indicated that a number of athletes attending the nationals are also 2019 Canada Winter Games hopefuls.
