The Cape Breton Screaming Eagles have acquired defenceman Ian Smallwood of St. John’s in a Quebec Major Junior Hockey League trade.

The Screaming Eagles picked up the 18-year-old Smallwood from the Quebec Remparts in exchange for a ninth-round pick in the next year’s QMJHL draft.

Smallwood played 20 QMJHL games over two seasons with the Saint John Sea Dogs, registering a goal and an assist and was on the team’s roster during last spring’s run to the Memorial Cup although he didn’t see any playing time in the post-season.

The Remparts acquired his rights this fall, but the six-foot-two, 185-pound rearguard didn’t play any games for Quebec, instead splitting his time between the Woodstock Slammers and South Shore Lumberjacks of the Maritime Hockey League. He has collected 14 points in 17 MHL games so far this season. Overall, he has appeared in 66 MHL games, mostly with Woodstock, scoring five goals and adding 26 assists.
