N.L. rink finishes out of medal contention at national mixed curling championship

Middleton Curling Club is hosting the Provincial Masters.

Team from St. John's can't come up with a win in second stage of Squenay, Que., event

Newfoundland and Labrador couldn’t match an impressive first half of the competition with a similarly strong closing run and finished out of medal contention at the Canadian mixed curling championship in Saguenay, Que.

The St. John’s rink of Corey Schuh, Erin Porter, Andrew Taylor and Brooke Godsland had won four of its first five games, but lost its remaining matches of the event to finish 4-6 overall.

That included four losses in the championship pool — or second phase of the 14-team event event — which saw eight rinks, including Schuh’s, advance in search of a medal-round berth.

Newfoundland lost 7-0 to Quebec and 9-3 to New Brunswick in its last games on Friday.

Quebec takes on Manitoba, while the Northwest Territories faces New Brunswick in semifinal games today, leading to the gold- and bronze-medal contests tonight.
