N.L. teams finish play at national hoops events

Newfoundland and Labrador’s boys and girls under-15 (midget) teams both finished with three wins in five games at Canadian age-group basketball championships this week.

 

The girls, playing in Fredericton, N.B., and boys in Kamloops, B.C., each finished up with placement-round wins over Prince Edward Island and the Northwest Territories after going 1-2 in preliminary play, where each had wins over P.E.I.

The U15 girls were led by Ally Wilkins of Portugal Cove-St. Philip’s (9.8 points per game) and Caroline Jardine of St. John’s (9.2 ppg, 6.8 rebounds per game), while Arpandeed Singh of St. John’s led the boys’ U15 team with 10.4 ppg.

National U17 (juvenile) championships were also held this past week, with N.L. teams coming away with 1-4 records.

In Fredericton, N.B., Carly Stevenson of St. John’s (11.25 ppg, 8.5 rpg) led the way for her team, while in Kamloops, Calen D’entremont (17.5 pppg in 2 GP) of St. john’s and Caleb Sooley of Mount Pearl (14.4 ppg) were the province’s top scorers.

The wins for the N.L. juvenile teams both came against P.E.I. in the placement round.
