It could be a super Saturday for Newfoundland ball hockey as three teams representing the province are in championship games at the Canadian championships which have been ongoing in metro St. John’s all week.
The Black Horse men’s ‘A’ team, Newfoundland United women’s ‘A’ squad and Newfoundland Colonial Master Selects 40-plus group are going after gold medals Saturday.
The Glacier in Mount Pearl will be a very busy spot Saturday. Starting things off is the masters final at noon featuring the Master Selects and Halton, Ont. Leafs, followed by the women’s ‘A’ final at 2 p.m. between Newfoundland United and Ottawa Capitals. At 4 p.m., Black Horse faces off against Ontario’s New Tecumseth Xtreme.
Off course, all three Newfoundland teams are guaranteed at least a silver medal.
In semifinal play Friday evening, Black Horse blanked Niagara War Pigs of Ontario 4-0 behind Mark Yetman’s shutout goaltending. Nathan Yetman, Mason Reid, Connor Donaghey and Zach O’Brien scored.
In the women’s semifinal, Sara Diamond scored the goal and Kelsey Shute registered the shutout as the United squad blanked B.C. Selects 1-0.
In the masters semi, recently-inducted Hall of Famer Terry Ryan, Peter Cabral and Mike Gambin, into an empty net, had the goals as the Master Selects stopped the Montreal Machine 3-1. Ray Martin got the win in goal.
