It was a clean sweep for Saskatchewan at the 2019 Everest Canadian senior curling championships in Chilliwack, B.C.
Saskatchewan’s Bruce Korte won the senior men’s title and Team Saskatchewan, skipped by Sherry Anderson, captured gold in the senior women’s championship.
Korte defeated Ontario’s Bryan Cochrane and his defending Canadian champions from Russell, Ont., by an 8-4 count.
Korte was joined by his Nutana Curling Club team consisting of third Darrell McKee, second Kory Kohuch and lead Rory Golanowski,
“We feel that, after all those years that we didn’t do better at the Brier, then coming here and winning it, we’re just so happy to be Team Canada and we will be so proud wearing (the Maple Leaf),” Korte was quoted on the Curling Canada web-site.
In the Canadian senior women’s final, Anderson prevailed in an 11-7 extra-end win over Ontario’s Sherry Middaugh to repeat as national champion.
“That was the most exhausting game I’ve ever played in,” said Anderson, who was joined by third Patty Hersikorn, second Brenda Goertzen and lead Anita Silvernagle on their Nutana Curling Club team.
“It went from highs and lows. I feel bad for Sherry and her team, but my girls battled back, they made a lot of great shots, and it was exciting I’m sure for the fans.”
Korte and Anderson will now represent Canada in the 2020 World Seniors. The site and date have yet to be announced by the World Curling Federation.
Canada has won a 10 men’s and 12 women’s titles since the World Seniors officially began in 2002.
The 2018 Canadian senior winners from last year — Ontario’s Cochrane and Saskatchewan’s Sherry Anderson — will represent Canada in the 2019 World Seniors, to be held April 20-27 in Stavanger, Norway.
