National boxing champion Carter Butler is The Telegram sports department’s choice as athlete of the week.
Butler, a 15-year-old with the Conception Bay South Boxing Club, was declared the national junior champion in the 46-kilogram weight class at the Canadian boxing championship in Edmonton last weekend.
He defeated Dennis Mirsoane of Ontario in the final.
Butler was one of four members of the provincial team to medal at the nationals. Sixteen-year-old Mitchell Lahey of the C.B.S. club claimed silver in his 81kg weight class, while 15-year-old Ryan Guay and 17-year-old James Thorne, both with the TRC club in St. John’s, earned bronze medals.
