The 2019 Newfoundland and Labrador Athletics Association (NLAA) road racing season got underway Sunday, with Colin Fewer and Jennifer Barron claiming titles in the Boston Pizza Flat Out 5K conducted in the northeast end of St. John’s.
Fewer covered the five-kilometre course in 15 minutes and 25 seconds, while Barron posted a time of 17:58 in the race, organized by Athletics Northeast (ANE). As a result, Fewer and Barron are the first-ever winners of the Jeff Penton Trophy Memorial Trophy, given to the Flat Out champions and named in honour of Penton, an ANE runner who died last year after a lengthy battle with cancer.
Grant Handrigan (16:12) and Jacopo Fragasso (17:07) finished second and third in the men’s division, while Krissy Dooling (19:28) and Sarah Molloy (19:49) rounded out the women’s top three.
The next race on the NLAA schedule is the Nautilus Mundy Pond 5K, set for April 28.
