The Memorial Sea-Hawks men’s basketball team has a huge two-game Atlantic University Sport series with the St. Francis Xavier X-Men starting tonight in Antigonish, N.S.

The 5-9 Sea-Hawks and 4-9 X-Men are tied for fifth place in the standings with 12 points apiece entering the weekend series with eight points on the line.

Each game is worth four points. Games are worth four points in cases where teams only meet twice during the regular season.

A sweep for Memorial would go a long way in all but guaranteeing the Sea-Hawks a spot in the AUS playoffs in Halifax in early March. However, that could be a tall order considering MUN is 0-6 on the road.

The 5-9 Sea-Hawks’ women’s team is also on the road in Antigonish, where they meet the X-Women, who are seeking their first win on the year.

The Lady Birds are coming off a split last weekend against the first-place UPEI Panthers, who came to St. John’s with just one loss this season.

Memorial holds down the sixth and final playoff spot in the conference, six points up on Saint Mary’s.

Memorial has three players in the top 10 in scoring in the conference: Sydney Stewart (third with 22 points per game), Haille Nickerson (sixth with 15.8) and Sydney Ezekiel (ninth, with 14.6 ppg).

Meanwhile, at the Field House in St. John’s, Memorial is playing host to the Saint Mary’s Huskies for three games. The series started last night, and continues tonight and Sunday afternoon.

The Huskies are 6-8 on the year, while the struggling Sea-Hawks are last in the conference at 1-13.
