Mount Pearl’s Rod Snow, one of the greatest rugby players this country has ever produced, is getting plenty of Twitter love as a result of a Tweet from the hugely-popular Rugby World Cup’s @rugbyworldcup official account.
Last week, @rugbyworldcup Tweeted, “The top try scorer from every position in Rugby World Cup history ... How do you think this team would get on at #RWC2019?”
The Tweet is in advance of the 2019 Rugby World Cup which is scheduled for Sept. 20-Nov. 2 in Japan.
Snow appeared in four Rugby World Cups — 1995 in South Africa, 1999 in Wales, 2003 in Australia and 2007 in France — the most of any prop in World Cup history.
@rugbyworldcup has 895,000-plus followers and the Tweet generated plenty of feedback.
Snow scored a try for Canada against Romania in his very first World Cup game, the first of a handful of scores he registered in World Cup play.
A 2016 inductee into the Rugby Canada Hall of Fame, Snow won 62 test (international) caps for Canada, the most of any Canadian front-row player.
Snow played professionally for 11 years, starting in South Africa and winding up in Cardiff, Wales, where he spent nearly a decade playing for Newport RFC. He is the highest-scoring prop in Newport’s 150-year history, crossing the line 30 times in 190 games played.
Snow, who also played with the Newport Gwent Dragons, was inducted into the Newport Rugby Hall of Fame.
Two Newfoundlanders are in the running for spots on the national team for next month’s World Cup — Patrick Parfrey of St. John’s and Ciaran Hearn of C.B.S.
In Japan, Canada is entered in Pool B with New Zealand, South Africa, Italy and Namibia.
