Catherine Barrett of St. John’s took another step — or given her sport, another stroke — towards competing in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics when she was named to the 2019 Canadian artistic (synchronized) swimming senior national team.

Barrett, who trains at the Ontario Regional Training Centre in Toronto, has made a rapid rise through the national team program, starting out on the Canadian 13-15 team in 2015, then moving on to the junior national and senior Nextgen squads in 2017.

The senior national team was named after a selection camp earlier this month in Montreal.

Barrett who began swimming with the Sea Stars program in St. John’s a decade ago will be busy next year.

The Olympic Qualification event that will determine if Canada makes it to Tokyo is the 2019 Pan American Games in Lima, Peru. The Pan Am Games are taking place immediately after the 2019 world championships in Gwangju, Korea. The Canadians will also be taking part in the 2019 FINA Artistic Swimming World Series, including the Canada Open in Quebec City next spring.
