The St. Lawrence Laurentians badly needed a win and they came up with a big one Sunday on the Burin Peninsula.

Stefan Slaney scored twice as the Laurentians handed defending champion Holy Cross Kirby Group its first loss of the 2019 season, fashioning a 4-1 victory in Johnson Insurance Challenge Cup soccer play at Centennial Field.

The Laurentians (2-5-1) had lost just a single win in their first six games of the season and were coming off a 3-1 setback to Holy Cross on Saturday. But in the rematch, Marc Pittman of St. Lawrence scored 19 minutes and the home side remained in front.

Brett Hennebury also scored for the Laurentians, while Harry Carter replied for Holy Cross (5-1-0), now tied for first place with the Stavanger Dental Feildians, who had shut out the Conception Bay South That Pro Look Strikers 1-0 on Saturday.

The Strikers (4-2-1) bounced back Sunday to record a 4-0 shutout of Paradise North Atlantic (0-7) at the Dianne Whelan Complex.

Nico Boehme had two goals for C.B.S., with Ryan Thistle and Erik Mathiasen adding singletons. Scott Budden had the shutout.
