Normally, a tie might not be considered a big rebound result, but the St. Lawrence Laurentians’ 1-1 draw with Feildians Stavanger Dental in Johnson Insurance Challenge Cup soccer on Sunday could be seen as just that.
At Centennial Field in St. Lawrence, Adam Kelly scored early in the second half to give the Laurentians a single point a day after the visiting Feildians had pasted the home side 7-1.
The weekend results ensure St. Lawrence will finish in fourth place, but Sunday’s game against a tough Feildians side has to provide at least some hope for the Laurentians (5-10-3) in the Challenge Cup playoff tournament which they will host on the Labour Day.
League-leading scorer Tyler Forsey had the Feildians’ goal Sunday, a tally at the end of the opening half that extended his modest scoring streak to three games. That includes a four-goal performance in Saturday’s scorefest.
Emmanuel Dolo, with two goals, and Carter Mackey also scored for the Double Blues on Saturday. Marcus Jackman had the lone marker for St. Lawrence.
Their weekend trip to the Burin Peninsula left the Feildians (11-4-2) just a single point away from clinching a top-two finish in the final standings. The third-place C.B.S. That Pro Look Strikers (9-7-2) are six points back of the Double Blues with two games remaining on their schedule. Wins are worth six points.
The Strikers came close to being assured of a third-place finish Sunday night at the Dianne Whelan Complex in Paradise, but a goal by Trevory Ivany with one minute remaining in regulation gave C.B.S. a 1-0 win over still-winlless Paradise North Atlantic (0-14-2). D'arcy Bennett posted the shutout.
Feildians, who also have three games left, are seven points back of the league-leading and defending champion Holy Cross Kirby Group Crusaders. Holy Cross would be locked into first place had it won Saturday night in Topsail, but the Strikers beat them 2-0 on late second-half goals by Daniel Agbesse and Ranaldo Morris and shutout goalkeeping from Scott Budden.

N.L. will have one entry as its hosts national Challenge Cup
The Labour Day Challenge Cup playoff tournament will decide Newfoundland and Labrador’s lone representative for the Toyota national men’s championship Oct. 9-14 in metro St. John’s.
In past years, the hosts often had two entries, but with the Northwest Territories sending a representative this year, there is already a full field of 10 teams.
Newfoundland will have two teams for the national Jubilee Trophy women’s championship tourney, being held here in conjunction with the Canadian men’s event.
There will be eight teams entered in the national Jubilee Trophy competition, including the two from this province.
