A pair of St. John’s natives have been named to Canada’s junior rugby team which will play in the Junior World Rugby Trophy championship Aug. 28-Sept. 9 in Bucharest, Romania.
Campbell Clarke of the Swilers Rugby Football Club and Jack McCarthy from the Vandals RFC were among the 26 selected to the team by coach Jeff Williams.
Pat Parfrey of St. John’s is the team’s manager.
Clarke is only 17, but he impressed selectors at the team’s training camp in Shawinigan Lake, B.C.
Clarke scored a pair of tries in an exhibition game against the B.C. under-23 team, and was among the fittest backs at the camp.
Canada opens the tournament Aug. 28 against Portugal, and then plays Uruguay Sept. 1. Four days later, there’s a game against Fiji before playing an undetermined opponent Sept. 9.
